What Is Fête de la Musique?

The festival began in France in 1982 when Jack Lang, French Minister of Culture, and Maurice Fleuret introduced the idea that “music everywhere, concerts nowhere” Urging both amateur and professional musicians onto public streets for free performances on the summer solstice. It quickly became an international phenomenon, now celebrated in over 2,000 cities across more than 100 countries every June 21

Global to Local: Laguna Beach’s 18th Year

Laguna Beach first joined this global celebration nearly two decades ago. In 2025 the festival marks its 18th edition, evolving from a modest pop‑up to a beloved community tradition. This year’s event, organized by Laguna Beach Sister Cities, brings more than 45 local performers to  downtown’s vibrant streets and plazas

A Brief History of Global Fête de la Musique

  • 1976: American musician Joel Cohen proposed “Saturnales de la Musique” during the solstices in France

1981–82: Maurice Fleuret and Jack Lang formalized the concept, and June 21, 1982 saw the first official Fête de la Musique in Paris

Expansion: By the 1990s it had spread across Europe; by 2011 over 110 countries were participating, and today they number in the hundreds

Modern Era: Renamed “Make Music Day” in English-speaking countries, the festival now includes pop‑ups, digital features, sustainable practices, and cultural diversity
